Doggy Skin Care Demystified

You’ve Heard of Skin-Care, but what about Fur-Care?

Working Dog Breed body 1

Our furry friends can be vulnerable to the sun’s harmful UV rays and pesky insects, and, as pet parents, we want our dogs to be comfortable, healthy, and safe from the elements. It’s easy to make sure your dog’s skin and coat stay healthy with a few easy tips and tricks.

Safe Sunscreens for Dogs

While sunscreen is often a part of our daily routine, it’s equally important to consider it for our pets, especially those with short hair or light-colored fur. Dogs with sensitive skin or those who love lounging in the sun can be prone to sunburn, which can irritate skin and lead to more severe issues like skin cancer.

When choosing a sunscreen for your dog, ensure it is specially formulated for pets. Avoid ingredients like zinc oxide or octocrylene, which can be toxic if ingested. Look for sunscreens labeled “pet-safe” and check for natural ingredients like aloe vera and vitamin E. These ingredients help soothe the skin while offering protection from UV rays.

When you’re applying sunscreen, focus on exposed areas of your dog’s skin, such as the nose, ears, and belly. Reapply every few hours, especially if your dog is swimming or sweating. Always test a small amount of the product on a small area of their skin first to ensure there’s no irritation.

Effective Bug Sprays Without Harmful Chemicals

Insects can be a nuisance for both you and your dog. Here are a few natural and dog-friendly options to keep your dog bug-free.

  1. Essential Oils: Natural essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, and citronella can repel insects. Dilute these oils with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, and apply them to your dog’s coat. Citronella candles are another great option if you are enjoying the outdoors with your pup.
  2. Herbal Sprays: Commercially available bug sprays that use natural ingredients like rosemary or neem oil are perfectly safe for dogs, and easy to grab on a trip to the store.
  3. Tick and Flea Collars: Natural tick and flea collars use essential oils and other natural substances to repel mosquitos as well as fleas and ticks.

Skincare Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Coat

While we are taking preventative measures to make sure our dog’s skin stays healthy, it is important to keep their coats shiny as well. With these simple steps you can help your pup maintain their show-stopping coat.

  1. Regular Brushing: Brushing removes loose fur, dirt, and debris while distributing natural oils that keep their skin moisturized. For dogs with longer hair, brushing helps prevent mats and tangles, which can lead to skin irritation.
  2. Proper Bathing: Use a dog-specific shampoo to avoid irritating their skin, and only bathe your dog as needed—over-bathing can lead to dryness and a loss of their natural oils.
  3. Balanced Diet: Diet is one of the most important factors in maintaining a healthy coat. Foods rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, like fish oil or flaxseed, can enhance coat shine and reduce skin inflammation. How they feel inside will always reflect on the outside!
  4. Hydration: Proper hydration supports overall skin health and helps maintain a vibrant coat.

As always, if you have any specific concerns, please consult your vet! But we are confident with these tips you and your dog can go well into the fall feeling prepared for the great outdoors.
